Olive Branch downtown could get lift from lofts

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) - Developers believe they can bring new life to the Old Town area of Olive Branch by building new loft-style apartments.

The Commercial Appeal reports that CBI Construction Co. has drawn plans and received approval from the Old Towne Design and Review Board to construct two upscale apartments atop a 100-year-old building on Depot Street.

Mid-Southerners will be lined up early Friday morning trying to get the best deals during stores’ annual Black Friday sales.

In fact, in an effort to stretch the holiday shopping season a little further, some national chains are ditching Black Friday altogether. The Gap, Walmart and Sears are opening up stores across the country on Thanksgiving night.

DeSoto County holding redistricting meetings

DeSoto County residents can attend a series of upcoming public meetings and let their county supervisor know what they think about the process.

Here’s the schedule for the meetings:

Olive Branch (District 1), Nov. 30, Olive Branch City Hall.

Southaven (District 2), Dec. 2, Southaven City Hall.

Horn Lake (District 4), Dec. 9, Horn Lake City Hall.

Hernando (District 5), Dec. 14, DeSoto County Administration Building.

Walls (District 3), Dec. 16, Walls City Hall.

All meetings are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Questions can be asked in-person or submitted in writing.

Olive Branch High School gets big donation from Verizon

The day before the Quistors’ showdown with rivals South Panola, the school’s going to get a big shot in the arm.

The Olive Branch High School athletic and technology programs will be splitting up a $10,000 check from Verizon Wireless.

“The school competed in Verizon’s Hometown Marketing TXT2Win Contest and obliterated the 28 competing high schools in the South region, amassing nearly 20,000 text messages,” said a company representative in a written statement.

Nunnelee resigns from Mississippi State Senate

Moments after the Mississippi Secretary of State certified the results from this month’s congressional election today, Alan Nunnelee resigned from his seat in the state Senate.

Nunnelee, a Republican, beat the incumbent, Democrat Travis Childers, for Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District.

Baptist DeSoto giving back to veterans

Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto is hosting a Veterans Day celebration to honor current and former North Mississippi servicemen and women.

Brig. Gen. Roger L. Shields, deputy commander of the Mississippi National Guard’s joint force headquarters, and Southaven Mayor Greg Davis will be the keynote speakers.

The event will take place at the hospital on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 9 a.m.

Nunnelee picks Hawks to lead transition team

Congressman-Elect Alan Nunnelee isn't wasting any time forming his transition team as he gets ready to move to D.C.

He announced Thursday that he asked the former deputy director of management for the White House under President George W. Bush, Diane Hawks to lead his transition team.

Hawks also served as the director of deployment for the Republican Senatorial Committee.
