SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Organizers are promising bigger and better things for the second year of the Mid-South Fair in DeSoto County.

Mark Lovell is a man who has a hard time standing still. As president of Universal Fairs, he just wrapped up another successful Delta Fair, and now has his sights on the 2010 Mid-South Fair.

Lovell said fair-goers should get ready for a good time.

"We're gonna fire it up and put a lot of energy into it," he said. "We'll have over twice the rides than last year, and four times as many attractions."

According to Lovell, the fair will have something for every member of the family, from exhibits to concerts. He says if you provide the proper environment, they will come.

Olive Branch woman charged with stealing from yard sales

OLIVE BRANCH, TN (WMC-TV) - Signs advertising yard sales pop up every weekend.  One of them lured people to the yard of Shaw Williams and his family this past Saturday.

"Actually the length of the driveway across," said Williams of the size of his sale.  "Little bit of everything - clothes and a lot of baby stuff."

There was so much stuff Williams says he and his family never noticed some of it disappear without getting paid for it.

"When you have that many people you don't think about it and are not watching for it," he said.

But Williams got jewelry, clothes, and even a lamp back when an Olive Branch Police officer pulled into his driveway.

$1.1M loan to help fund Olive Branch

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) - Olive Branch elected officials will borrow $1.1 million to meet the city's financial obligations until residents pay ad valorem taxes after the first of the year.

The Commercial Appeal reports it's not uncommon for cities to take out tax-anticipation loans. Officials may borrow from a bank or from their own city, from natural gas or water funds.

Horn Lake took out a tax-anticipation loan in 2007, and Southaven did it about two years ago as the national economy started to slide into recession.

DeSoto Sheriff proposes ankle bracelets to alleviate jail overcrowding

By Chip Washington - bio | email

HERNANDO, MS (WMC-TV) - If DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco has his way, the overcrowding problem in his jail may soon be a thing of the past.  Under a plan proposed by Rasco, certain inmates would be released from the jail and would be monitored at home by ankle bracelets.

Tuesday, Rasco said his solution would both reduce the inmate population in the DeSoto County Jail and save taxpayers money.

"We're not talking about anyone who commits a felony," he said. "We're talking about people who are going through a hard time. They have a job. We can put these ankle bracelets on them let them go to work and get caught up on their fines."

The jail currently houses 430 inmates, dozens more than its 395 inmate capacity.  According to Rasco, only non-violent offenders would be released under his plan.
