MDEQ Announces recycling grants for local governments

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has announced the availability of grants for cities and counties for recycling and materials conservation projects.  Eligible projects include funding for recycling equipment and supplies, educational programs, and promoting the purchase of products with recycled content.  Eligible local governments may submit grant proposals for a potential funding award of up to $100,000.

Olive Branch Police Department unveils new high-tech equipment

OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - The Olive Branch Police Department is going high-tech to try and catch law breakers in their city.

The department recently purchased a license plate reader, or LPR, that can read license plates while vehicles move in real time.

Residents fear church will disrupt peaceful neighborhood

OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - Residents of the Laurelbrook subdivision are fearful the construction of a new church disrupt will disrupt life in their neighborhood.

"There's gonna be an entrance and an egress point that connects to our street, so every Sunday for two services, plus Wednesday nights, we're gonna be faced with 400 plus church members," said Kevin Manns, a resident of the subdivision.

Laurelbrook is located just off Highway 302 in DeSoto County, just outside of Olive Branch's city limits. Tuesday, crews were already digging for the new Great Commission Church, which will set directly across the street from Manns' home.

Baptist DeSoto has received new technology from Bioness to assist patients recovering from a stroke. The public will have a chance to see this most recent advancement on Wednesday, July 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the outpatient rehabilitation building.
Potential candidates should call 662-772-2120 to take a short qualification survey over the phone. If you are a candidate for the new technology, an appointment will be scheduled for July 21.
The facility will now be the only hospital in the DeSoto area with such technology.

Vet discusses dangers of canine heat stroke

The summer heat has set in, which means pet owners need to take precautions to ensure their dogs do not suffer from heat stroke.

According to Dr. Carr Kelsey of the Kelsey Canine Medical Center in Collierville, dogs struggle with heat just as much as humans. They can suffer from heat stroke and heat exhaustion in just a short period of time.

Dogs already have a higher normal body temperature than humans of around 101.5°F. Unlike people, dogs have very limited sweat glands located in the pads of their paws. These glands can not sufficiently cool the dog off, which is why they also pant.
