Community opposed to movie theater will meet

OLIVE BRANCH, MS- (WMC-TV) - Neighbors in an Olive Branch community opposed to the construction of a movie theater will meet Tuesday.

Residents near the corner of Goodman Road and Malone Road are calling for action against the proposed theater. This site is the second one to meet opposition from residents.

"I don't think anybody in these neighborhoods or this neighborhood is against commercial development," said Larry Abramson, who lives nearby.

Just north of some of subdivisions like Abramsons, lies the site of a proposed movie theater.

Abramson says the community is worried about the late hours and the potential for a crime increase. He is also worried about traffic and noise and that a business with its own traffic light could make for more crowded roadways.

The theater developer's attorney did not wish to comment on the matter.

City leaders will discuss the issue on March 19.

Air traffic control towers could shut down due to sequester

Air traffic control towers could shut down due to sequester

The so-called sequester could have a direct impact on airports and flights out of Memphis International.

Air traffic control towers could potentially be shut down in Millington , Jackson, Tennessee, Olive Branch and Tupelo, Mississippi.

Memphis International Airport Director Larry Cox says that the cuts could shut down two of the facility's three security checkpoints.

But Cox say an even bigger problem for you would begin with major airports, and trickle down to Memphis.

He said you should prepare to travel as if there were weather-related changes to your flight.

"So I'm not saying there won't be any impact but I'm saying what ever we have here would be minimal," said Cox.

FedEx said they are monitoring the situation, but it is too early to comment.

But, a spokesman for the shipping giant said they have plans in place for just about anything.

DeSoto Co. leaders: New $5 million heating system isn't working

(WMC-TV) - Although it was just installed last summer people are complaining about the heat, or the lack thereof, at the DeSoto County Courthouse.
The county invested about $5 million into a green heating system.
All in hopes of saving taxpayers money over time, but the new system is doing more bad than good.
The DeSoto County Courthouse is freezing inside, according to County Clerk Dale Thompson.
"We've had to bring in space heaters in here, and they don't want us to do that," she said.
It sort of defeats the purpose of a new state of the art water chilling system installed less than a year ago.
"It's not working for this building because it's such an old building and it's hard to heat up," said Thompson.

Collection agency hired to track down DeSoto Co. criminals

(WMC-TV) - To say the DeSoto County Circuit Clerk's office has a tough job is an understatement.
According to the office, 90 percent of the time criminals do not pay their court fees.
Some fees are roughly 20 to 25 years worth of criminal fines. The fines from felons who have served their time and moved on.
Dale Thompson said many of these people were supposed to start paying once they got out of jail. She said now time is ticking as they have hired a firm to investigate and track them down.
The collection agency called Pioneer is known for recovering unpaid bills. Once someone has missed three payments, they will be sent to the agency.
"They would definitely help themselves if they would pay their fines and get current," said Thompson.
