Olive Branch board votes against new movie theater

Olive Branch's Board of Aldermen have said a resounding "no" to a new movie theater.

The board voted six to one against the movie theater.

Oliver Branch's Mayor, Sam Rikard, said the crowd erupted with cheers when the decision was announced.

Malco is already building a cinema one mile from this neighborhood that was recently re-zoned to commercial.

Olive Branch Citizen's Police Academy

The Olive Branch Police Department is hosting the 12th Citizen's Police Academy Class March 7 through May 9.

Citizens get a chance to take a closer look to what police do on a day-to-day basis.

Also, citizens get to see the functions officers do including investigations, procedures, K-9 operations, DUI and traffic enforcement.

Classes are once-a-week from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Mississippians are 'most religious' in the country

Mississippi tops the list of most religious states once again, according to a new Gallup poll.

The survey found that 58% of people living there consider themselves very religious.

Utah and Alabama tied for second in the poll with 56%.

Arkansas ranks fifth and Tennessee ranks seventh. Vermont is the least religious, according to the poll.

Olive Branch to host National LawFit challenge

Law enforcement officers from across the country will descend upon Olive Branch for a national fitness competition this summer.

The National LawFit Challenge involves a series of fitness and job related events completed by teams and individual officers.

Events include: Bench press, sit-ups, sit and reach flexibility, pull-ups, a 1.5 mile run, and suspect pursuit course.

This year, Olive Branch Police are sending challenges to other area departments through Facebook to participate.

Winners compete for bragging rights, cash, and prizes.

Olive Branch will host the national challenge for the second year, after being home to a regional event in 2011.

This year’s competition is slated for June 13-15.

Valentine's Day competition calls hospitals to sign up organ donors

Hospitals across the Memphis area are competing in the second annual 'Show Me Your Heart' Competition on Valentine's Day.

The Mid-South Transplant Foundation is sponsoring the competition where 14 hospitals compete to sign up people to the organ donor registry, and see how many hospital staff members and visitors are currently registered donors.

The hospital with the most registered donors and the hospital who registers the most new donors that day will each receive trophies from Mid-South Transplant Foundation.

A booth will be set up in each hospital in the lobby or cafeteria. MSTF staff members and volunteers will be at the booth to answer any questions. They will also offer a heart shaped candy to all who show their heart or organ donor on their driver’s license or register as an organ and tissue donor during the event that day.
