Tax scammers targeting church congregations

Tax scammers targeting church congregations

The IRS says scammers are targeting church congregations in the south. They’re promising big tax returns, but the con artists are the ones making off with all the money.

The crooks promise that if you pay them, they can get you a big check from the IRS. They say you'll get that money without providing any documents and it doesn't matter how little money you make.

But of course it doesn't work out as advertised.

Grocery cart thief sparks multi-state investigation

Grocery cart thief sparks multi-state investigation

Olive Branch police helped Tennessee detectives nab a man accused of stealing a truckload of shopping carts from a Memphis grocery store.

Schnucks employees say they were monitoring surveillance cameras on June 10 when they spotted a man loading eight carts onto a trailer pulled by a Chevrolet Suburban.

Workers at the Truse Parkway grocery store called police and two days later, detectives spotted the carts still being pulled by the vehicle.

Investigators followed the SUV as it headed south on Riverdale towards the Mississippi state line. In an apparent effort to slip across the state line and hopefully avoid arrest, detectives say Willie Lyon refused to stop until he crossed Stateline Rd. and reached Mississippi.

However, unbeknownst to Lyon, the deputies following him had already alerted Olive Branch police who were waiting for him.

Investigators say Lyons had stolen carts from at least a half dozen stores and sold them as scrap metal.
