Summer beckons. School’s out.

The fun factor rises as we plan to enjoy our favorite outdoor activities. But all the action sometimes leads to accidents as I found out the hard way last July 17.

This electronic town crier broke his neck in two places in a freak Union Avenue car wreck. While I didn’t need a blood transfusion after an unfortunate collision, I easily could have found myself facing that scenario. We just never know the day or the hour when we’ll count on the forward thinking people who take time out to donate blood on a regular basis.

Crawfish Music Festival hits Olive Branch

One Mid-South festival is combining the love of music and crawfish.

Be sure to catch the first Crawfish Musical Festival by the South Branch Lions, Saturday, May 4, from 3pm-11pm at the Whispering Woods Conference and Hotel in Olive Branch.

For 10 dollars you can enter a crawfish eating contest and see who can be the first to eat three pounds of crawfish the fastest.

There will be live music, games for the kids, and craft vendors on site.

It's 5 dollars to enter, kids 12 and under get in free.

Relay For Life Under The Stars

Relay For Life Under The Stars

Cancer survivors will make the first lap of the event that will kick off the evening of the DeSoto County Relay For Life. Volunteers will walk and run to support people that are fighting cancer and remember those that lost their fight with the disease. The annual race starts at Snowden Grove Park on Getwell Road in Southaven, MS, on May 10th. The 12 hour event starts at 6pm and will include bands, games, contests, and prizes.

South Branch Lions Club kicks off their 1st Annual Crawfish Music Festival Saturday, May 4, at Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center. The family friendly event includes free parking, boiled crawfish, and live music. The festival begins at 3pm and features musical guests Brian Randle, Wes Sheffield, and Trent LeJune & Double Time. The event begins at 3pm. There is a $5.00 admission fee for adults, children 12 and under get in free.

Legal clinic coming to North Mississippi

Legal clinic coming to North Mississippi

A free legal clinic is coming the North Mississippi.

It is happening April 16 in Hernando at the DeSoto County Courthouse.

The clinic will help low income people with divorces, child support or custody cases, name changes and other similar cases.

It starts at 4 p.m. in the afternoon.

Participation does have income requirements. If you want to be a part call 601-960-9577 ahead of time to register.

The project is a cooperative effort by the University of Mississippi School of Law, the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project, the DeSoto County Bar, and the DeSoto County Chancery Court.
