3-year-old hospitalized after severe beating | News
OLIVE BRANCH, MS- (WMC-TV) - A three-year-old boy has been hospitalized, and the man accused of putting him there, is behind bars in DeSoto County on $1 million bond.
Badly beaten and bruised the little boy has been recovering at Lebonheur all week. He's expected to recover, but it will take a while for the visible injuries and trauma to go away.
Three-year-old Terry Hill Junior's basketball goal is right where he left it in the front yard.
Olive Branch Police Chief Don Gammage said he is heartbroken to see pictures of the boy with bruises and swelling all over his little body.
Gammage says it happened in a mobile home in Olive Branch at the hands of his mother's live-in boyfriend, David Martin. He is now in jail for severely beating the boy.
"This is probably one of the worst cases I've seen in the last 25 years I've been in law enforcement," said Gammage.
By telephone, the child's biological father told us both his son's eyes were swollen shut, and he has bruises all over his body. Despite the brutal beating, he's expected to recover with no long term injuries. The couple's neighbors are outraged
"He's my son regardless of blood, as far as I'm concerned," said neighbor Percy Glynn, "no child should be harmed that way."
Olive Branch Police say the boy's grandmother only found out about the abuse when her daughter (the child's mother) called asking if she and her son could move back in with her because of the abuse to her son. The grandmother took the boy to the hospital.
Authorities tell us the child is still at Lebonheur recovering. We are also told more charges could be announced in the case.
