Blood Drive to be held Tuesday at B.J. Chain Public Library

Olive Branch residents have the opportunity to participate in a blood drive tomorrow.

The B.J. Chain Public Library, located at 6619 Miss. 305 N. in Olive Branch, will partner with the Red Cross for the blood drive, scheduled for Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cuts coming to DeSoto County Schools

DeSoto County Schools will eliminate 40 teaching positions through attrition and by not renewing contracts as part of a $17.7 million cost-cutting plan for next school year.

Supt. Milton Kuykendall said Tuesday he has been warning for months of cuts to the fiscal 2011 budget, and the cuts will affect every department.

Olive Branch residents surprised by sudden flood waters

Homeowners near Olive Branch were surprised suddenly rising floodwaters Monday.

When residents woke up Monday in the Center Hill subdivision, just outside of Olive Branch, many of them found something they were neither expecting or prepared for: yards and streets overflowing with several feet of water.

Resident Sal Marascalco said he was completely caught off guard.

DeSoto County exceeds census average

The tally is in, and DeSoto County was one of the best in Mississippi at filling out and returning census forms.

From Sunday's DeSoto Appeal:

The final tally is in and 74 percent of DeSoto County households returned their federal census forms -- a 2 percent increase over the return rate in 2000.

The county's 74 percent return rate surpassed the national rate of 72 percent. It also outpaced the state rate of 67 percent.
