8 DeSoto County high school students named National Merit Finalists

Several DeSoto County high school students are in the hunt for millions of dollars in college scholarship money because of their academic achievements.

This year, eight students from the area have been named Nation Merit Finalists. It’s a record number of finalists for the district.

The students are among a pool of about 15,000 other nationwide that will compete for $34 million in scholarships.

DeSoto County school officials tell us that the National Merit Finalists represent less than one percent of high school seniors.

The district credits a Preliminary SAT class for helping students achieve higher test scores. The program started three years ago at Southaven High School and has since spread to all of the high schools in the district.

Students started by taking the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test as juniors.

Electrolux today named WG Yates & Sons Construction as its general contractor for the construction of its new North American Cooking Products manufacturing center in Memphis.  Yates will be responsible for the management of the $80 million construction project.

In addition, the company announced that more than 50 percent of the $80 million construction spend would go to Memphis-area firms, with a minimum of 15 percent going to minority and women-owned area businesses.  Electrolux originally committed to spend $30 million with local firms, and this represents a 50 percent increase in local spending.  The company has already spent $5 million with 10 other local firms.
