Permission granted to “KICK BUTTS”!

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), in collaboration with other local organizations, will encourage youth to take a stand against big tobacco companies and educate their peers about the importance of not smoking on Kick Butts Day, Wednesday, March 20.

Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism which empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against big tobacco companies. Health officials want to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco.

Representatives from the health department will be at the following locations on Wednesday, March 20, to distribute information and tips on smoking cessation:

3030 Poplar Ave.
10 a.m. to noon

• University of Memphis-University Center
499 University
1 p.m.

New Malco movie theater underway

After years of holding off, a new movie theater is coming to one north Mississippi town by the end of this year.

Malco recently started construction on Goodman road in Olive Branch.

The project has been on hold for a few years as owners waited for the economy to improve.

A wave of development is expected to move in with the new theater- including restaurants.

The project should take nine to ten months to complete.

Literacy Mid-South moving from Cooper-Young, students and tutors to meet in public libraries

After 15 years in Cooper-Young Literacy Mid-South is moving, changing the way they do business and making other progressive improvements.

The Adult Learning Program is getting a complete overhaul, and the Smart Memphis Coalition will be working in an even deeper, more comprehensive way with more than 125 education and literacy providers in the Mid-South, according to the organization's latest newsletter.

US Postal Service public meetings to discuss MS facility operations

The U.S. Postal Service has scheduled public meetings next week on local post offices in four north Mississippi communities.

According to WTVA-TV in Tupelo officials will discuss whether to reduce operations at the facilities or possibly close them and consolidate the service with nearby post offices.List of public meetings on possible closure of post offices in Mississippi. Start date is Monday, Nov. 26.

On Monday, Greenwood Springs will be the topic of a 6 p.m. meeting at the Splunge Volunteer Fire Department.
On Tuesday, USPS officials will hold a public hearing on the Van Vleet Post Office at 6 p.m. at Van Vleet Volunteer Fire Department.
On Wednesday, Derma will be the subject of the hearing at 6 p.m. at Derma City Hall.
On Thursday, a meeting to discuss the Sherman Post Office at the Sherman Public Library at 6 p.m.

I-269 Regional Vision Study meetings to be held

(WMC-TV) – The Memphis Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will be holding the second, and final round of public meetings concerning the new Interstate 269, now under construction.

During the meetings, discussion will focus on the impact of land usage, as well as transportation alternatives that may exist along the corridor of I-269.

A comment draft study meeting will first take place Nov. 27 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn & Suites near Wolfchase Galleria.

A second meeting, at which the final study will be presented for review, will be held Dec. 13 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., also held at the Holiday Inn & Suites near Wolfchase.

Multi-state marketing honors awarded to Southwest Tennessee Community College

Southwest Tennessee Community College won three awards at the National Conference for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) District 2 Conference for outstanding achievement in marketing communications.

The Medallion Awards ceremony was part of the NCMPR District 2 Fall District Conference, held October 21-24, 2012 at the Omni Oceanfront Hotel in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

NCMPR District 2 is comprised of community colleges in 11 states, along with the Bahamas and Bermuda. The NCMPR District 2 Medallion Awards is an annual awards' celebration honoring the marketing and communication efforts of community college marketing and public relations professionals.

Southwest received awards in the following categories:

Silver – Spring 2012 Corporate Training and Continuing Education Schedule
