Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken expanding to N. MS

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken is spreading its wings and expanding.

Wendy and Matt McCrory, owners of the Downtown and Collierville locations, have purchased franchising rights from the Bonner family - the founders of the locally famous restaurant.

There are currently five locations in the Memphis area and one in Nashville with plans for stores in Little Rock, Austin, Texas and Southaven.

'Taste of DeSoto' serves up county's best food

Many toured some of DeSoto County's best food in just thirty minutes, with the event, "Taste of DeSoto" Tuesday.

The event, held at Southaven's Landers Center, had samples of many restaurants around DeSoto  county area including The Boiling Point, Memphis Barbecue Co., Hernando's Blue Daze, Mesquite Chop House, Wise Guys, and many more.

The event benefited Love Works 25:40, which helps to get the homeless back on their feet. "Taste of DeSoto" also benefited Mississippi Children's Services which is partnered with the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. It provides a compassionate behavioral health and social services to children.

"Taste of DeSoto" is in honor of Tim Mote, a businessman of DeSoto county, who recently underwent liver transplant surgery. 'Taste of DeSoto" honors Mote and the American Liver Foundation by donating a portion to the foundation.

World Series of Poker comes to Tunica

The World Series of Poker will return to Tunica at the end of January for its eighth year.

Harrah’s Tunica will host the circuit event from January 24, 2013, through February 4.

There will be 12 gold ring events, but the main event starts on Friday, February 1.

Since 2005, Harrah’s officials say $32 million in prize money has been given out to winners.

In 2012, main event winner Kurt Jewell took home almost $200,000 from a field of more than 600 others.

Points from the events can qualify players for a seat at the national event in New Orleans.

Morgan Freeman's getting rid of everything - including the kitchen sink!

On Tuesday, November 13 at 9am sharp - everything's up for auction at Freeman's once-very-popular Madidi's Restaurant in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Freeman opened the up-scale restaurant with Clarksdale attorney Bill Luckett back in 2001.  It closed nine months ago.

Items being auctioned on the 13th include restaurant and bar equipment, supplies and decor.

Auctioneer Nick Clark of Nick Clark Auctions will conduct the auction live and on-site.

There is a 10% Buyer's Premium on all items purchased.

No word on whether Oscar-winner Freeman will be in attendance.

Olive Branch rolling out new alert system

The city of Olive Branch is rolling out a new service that can alert residents of potential dangers in the community.

Mayor Sam Rikard signed contracts for the CodeRED alert system after it was approved by the Board of Alderman last month.

Weather warnings, service interruptions, and other important community messages are all alerts that users can receive under the system.

To opt in, users must live inside the city limits and register at the city's website.

Users can select what types of alerts they want to receive and how they would like to receive them.

Land lines, cell phones, email and text messages are all available options.

On Monday the city will send messages to users to promote its' weather alert feature.

The Fillin' Station Grille will be having their second annual Chili Cook-Off this Sunday, October 7 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Enjoy the live band while eating burgers, salads and sandwiches as your kids jump on bouncies. 

Judges will determine which teams win cash prizes. 

First place- $150.  Second place- $75.  Third place- $50. 

It is $50 to enter the competition.     

All proceeds from the competition go to House Of Grace, a local faith based place of refuge for domestic violence victims and their children.

The Fillin' Station is located at 4840 Venture Dr. Southaven, MS.

Perkins pancakes benefit kids

Saturday, September 15 is Give Kids The World Pancake Day at Perkins Restaurants.

Customers can receive a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes.  While there, making a donation to Give Kids The World benefits children with life-threatening illnesses by giving them the chance to experience a cost-free family vacation in central Florida.

It's all part of Perkins' "Full Tummy Full Heart" campaign.
